[edit]

Lecture: Introduction to microbial physiology and structure – bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites etc.; Introduction to the immune system- cells, factors and mechanisms; molecular mechanisms in pathogen-host interactions– adherence, virulence, signaling and opportunistic infections; host response, suppression, modulation and evasion; microbial diseases and their societal impact; transmission of microbes - modes and rates of transmission; microbial evolution, antigenic variations, host-switching and molecular epidemiology; antimicrobial agents and resistance; principles of vaccination, herd immunity, implications on public health and biosafety; microbiome in health and disease; microbes in food and dairy industries; bioprocess engineering and technology; fermentation and pharmaceutical microbiology. Laboratory: Preparation of sterile culture media; isolation of microorganisms; bacterial and fungal staining procedures; identification through microscopy methods; Identification of immune cells by microscopy.
