About Us
[edit]The Department of Mathematics at IIT Delhi strives to be recognized for excellence among academic institutions in India and abroad.
It offers BTech and dual degrees in Mathematics and Computing (MnC), MSc Mathematics, and PhD programs. The department wishes to focus on providing a comprehensive curriculum at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, relevant research, and career opportunities.
The B.Tech. and dual degree programs in Mathematics and Computing (MnC) aim to balance abstract mathematical foundations and practical applications in computing, machine learning, data science, and other related fields of current trends.
Abstractness cannot be separated from mathematics, as it is the essence of its identity. In this spirit, the MnC program offers a unified framework that connects and underpins diverse areas while providing essential tools for applied fields. The programs are very popular and demanding among the JEE advanced aspirants. The MnC graduate students are well-placed in various sectors: analytics, consulting, finance, quant, network security, information technology and software. Some of the dual degree students choose to pursue higher studies and a PhD.
The master's program (MSc) is designed to enrich and encompass the solid grounding of all areas of advanced mathematics: pure math, applied math, probability, stochastics, statistics, optimization, and theoretical computer science. The project in the curriculum encourages and inculcates self-study and self-research. Quite a few MSc students are inspired to pursue research and join PhD programs in different institutes. MSc students also get placement opportunities in analytics and teaching-related fields, while some others opt to prepare and appear for competitive exams.
Our PhD program is long-standing and caters to almost every dimension of mathematics and theoretical computer science. In addition to conducting research within the institute, the scholars have numerous opportunities to work alongside international researchers. Participation in workshops, schools, symposiums, conferences, and visiting scholar positions is encouraged and positively supported. The institute additionally facilitates international conferences and research presentations through the RSTA and RETA schemes. The computing facilities available in the department, including the computing labs at the institute, such as the HPC, provide essential support for scholars engaged in extensive computational research. The database of journals and books is vast, facilitating high-quality research and extensive knowledge exposure.
