Rules and Regulations

IIT Delhi operates under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, and its own statutes and ordinances. This page provides an overview of the key rules governing student life, academics, and hostel living.

Academic Rules

Attendance

  • Minimum 75% attendance is required in all courses. Instructors may set a higher threshold.
  • Students falling below the attendance requirement may be debarred from the end-semester examination and awarded an F grade.

Examinations

  • Each course typically has two Minor Tests and one Major (End-Semester) Examination.
  • Use of unfair means in examinations is a serious offence leading to disciplinary action, including potential expulsion.
  • Make-up exams are granted only for documented medical emergencies or institute-approved absences.

Course Registration

  • Students must register for courses at the start of each semester.
  • Late registration incurs a fine.
  • Credit limits: UG students typically register for 18–24 credits per semester.
  • Course withdrawal (with W grade) is permitted up to a specified mid-semester deadline.

Academic Integrity

  • Plagiarism, copying, and any form of academic dishonesty are prohibited.
  • Offences are handled by the Standing Disciplinary Committee.

Hostel Rules

Detailed hostel rules are available at Hostel Rules. Key rules include:

General Conduct

  • Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited and is a criminal offence under UGC Regulations and the Supreme Court of India directives.
  • Silence hours are observed from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  • Consumption of alcohol, drugs, and smoking on campus is prohibited.
  • Possession of weapons, fireworks, or hazardous materials is not allowed.

Room and Facilities

  • Rooms are allotted by the hostel administration; unauthorised swapping is not permitted.
  • Cooking in rooms is not allowed; all hostels have a mess facility.
  • Electrical appliances beyond specified limits (heaters, cooking appliances) are prohibited in rooms.
  • Residents are responsible for maintaining cleanliness and not causing damage to hostel property.

Guests

  • Guests may stay overnight only with prior approval from the Warden.
  • Opposite-gender visitors are permitted in common areas only, during designated hours.

Anti-Ragging Policy

IIT Delhi maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging. The institute has:

  • An Anti-Ragging Committee headed by a senior faculty member
  • An Anti-Ragging Squad for monitoring
  • A 24×7 helpline for reporting incidents
  • Affidavits from students and parents at the time of admission

Complaints can be filed at studentaffairs.iitd.ac.in/antiragging or through the national helpline 1800-180-5522.

Leave and Absence

  • Students must apply for leave through the hostel Warden for absences exceeding 3 days.
  • Extended medical leave requires documentation from the Institute Hospital.
  • Leaving station during semester without permission is not permitted for UG students.
