Internships
[edit]Internships at IIT Delhi are coordinated primarily through the Office of Career Services (OCS) and through individual departmental programmes. Both summer and semester internships are common, with students typically completing at least one internship during their undergraduate studies.
Summer Internships
[edit]Summer internships take place during the summer break (May–July) and are the most common format:
- OCS-facilitated internships: Companies visit campus through a structured process similar to placements. Shortlisting, tests, and interviews are conducted on campus.
- Self-arranged internships: Students may independently apply to companies, research labs, or startups. These require approval from the department.
- Research internships: Students work in IIT Delhi labs or at other research institutions (IISc, IITs, universities abroad). Popular programmes include DAAD (Germany), Mitacs (Canada), NTU (Singapore), and various university-specific summer research programmes.
Semester Internships
[edit]Some programmes, particularly M.Tech. and MBA, include mandatory semester-long internships as part of the curriculum. B.Tech. students may also opt for a Practice School or industry semester in their final year, subject to department approval.
Timeline (Typical for B.Tech.)
[edit]| Year | Internship Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd Year | Summer internship (optional) | Self-arranged or through department contacts |
| 3rd Year | Summer internship (primary) | OCS-facilitated; most companies hire at this stage |
| 4th Year | Full-time placements | Coordinated by OCS starting in Semester I |
Key Programmes
[edit]- SURA (Summer Undergraduate Research Award): Institute-funded programme for students to work on research projects with IIT Delhi faculty during the summer.
- Foreign research internships: Many departments maintain partnerships with international universities. Students can apply through programmes like DAAD-WISE, Mitacs Globalink, Charpak (France), and S.N. Bose Scholars.
- Startup internships: Facilitated through the Entrepreneurship Development Council (eDC) and FITT (Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer).
Office of Career Services (OCS)
[edit]The OCS manages the internship and placement process. Key services include:
- Internship drives with top companies across sectors (tech, consulting, finance, core engineering)
- Resume and interview preparation workshops
- Internship fairs and networking events
- Alumni mentorship connections
