Grading System
Grading System
IIT Delhi follows a 10-point grading system based on letter grades. Student performance is measured using the Semester Performance Index (SPI) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
Grade Scale
| Letter Grade | Grade Point |
|---|---|
| A | 10 |
| A- | 9 |
| B | 8 |
| B- | 7 |
| C | 6 |
| C- | 5 |
| D | 4 |
| E | 2 |
| F (Fail) | 0 |
Additional grade notations:
- I — Incomplete (work pending; converts to a grade upon completion)
- W — Withdrawal (student withdrew from the course after the deadline)
- S / X — Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory (for audit or pass/fail courses)
- NP — Not Passed
Computing SPI and CGPA
The Semester Performance Index (SPI) for a given semester is calculated as:
SPI = Σ(Ci × Gi) / Σ(Ci)
where Ci is the credit for course i and Gi is the grade point earned.
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed over all semesters using the same formula applied cumulatively. If a course is repeated, only the latest grade is counted.
Degree Requirements
| Programme | Credits Required | Minimum CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech. | ~180 | 5.0 |
| Dual Degree (B.Tech. + M.Tech.) | ~240 | 5.0 |
| M.Tech. | ~60–70 | 6.0 |
| M.Sc. | ~80 | 5.5 |
| MBA | ~96 | 5.0 |
| Ph.D. | Course credits + thesis | 6.0 |
Academic Standing
- A student whose CGPA falls below 4.0 at the end of any semester is placed on academic probation.
- Students on probation are required to take a reduced course load and may be restricted from extracurricular activities.
- A student who fails to raise the CGPA above 4.0 within the stipulated period may face termination of registration.
Relative Grading
Most courses at IIT Delhi use relative grading, where grades are assigned based on the overall class performance distribution. The instructor determines the grade boundaries using the class mean and standard deviation as guidelines. Some courses, particularly lab-based or project-based courses, may use absolute grading.
