Academic Calendar

[edit]

The academic year at IIT Delhi is divided into two main semesters and an optional summer term. The institute follows a credit-based system where students register for courses each semester.

Semester Schedule

[edit]
Semester Typical Duration Key Activities
Semester I (Autumn) Late July – November Registration, classes (~16 weeks), minor tests, major examinations
Winter Break December – early January ~3 weeks
Semester II (Spring) January – May Registration, classes (~16 weeks), minor tests, major examinations
Summer Term May – July Optional summer courses, summer internships, research projects

Key Dates (Typical)

[edit]
  • Registration: First day of each semester. Late registration attracts a fine.
  • Course Add/Drop: First 1–2 weeks of the semester.
  • Minor Test 1: Around week 6–7.
  • Minor Test 2: Around week 11–12.
  • Major Examination: Final 2 weeks of the semester.
  • Grade Submission: Within 1 week after the major exam.
  • Convocation: Typically held in October/November.

Important Academic Milestones

[edit]
  • Orientation Week: Conducted before Semester I begins for new students, including campus tours, department introductions, and mentorship programme kick-off.
  • Mid-Semester Feedback: Students provide feedback on courses and teaching quality midway through the semester.
  • Course Withdrawal: Students may withdraw from a course (with "W" grade) up to a specified deadline, typically around week 10.

Institute Holidays

[edit]

IIT Delhi observes national holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti), major religious festivals (Holi, Diwali, Eid, Christmas), and institute-specific breaks. The official list of holidays is published annually by the Time Table Unit.
