SBL630 : Advanced Cellular Biology
[edit]Lecture: Membrane organisation and cellular ultrastructure; Intracellular transport- vesicular transport, organellar transport; Endoplasmic reticulum and Glogi; Protein folding- chaperone assisted folding, ER and membrane proteins; Cytoskeleton- Microtubules, motors and mitosis; Microfilaments, Intermediate filaments and beyond; Energy conversion: mitochondria and chloroplasts. Introduction to Cell signalling – growth factor and cytokine signalling; The eukaryotic cell cycle, cell death – apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy and other forms of cell death. Interaction between the cell and their environment, stem cells and their applications, cellular hallmarks of cancer and techniques in cell biology: ways of working with cells – analysing and visualizing cells. Laboratory: Visualization of cellular organelles like nuclei and plasma membrane using fluorescent labelling methods; transfection of plasmid DNA in mammalian cells and monitoring expression of GFP in an organelle specific manner; BrdU staining of cellular DNA and FACS sorting: analysis of cell cycle progression; gradient ultracentrifugation based separation of organelles.
