Physics & Astronomy Club (PAC) is a prominent student-led organization at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) dedicated to fostering a deep-seated interest in the physical sciences and the mysteries of the cosmos. Operating under the motto "From quarks to quasars," the club serves as a central hub for students ranging from casual stargazers to serious research enthusiasts. Its primary mission is to bridge the gap between theoretical physics and practical observational astronomy, providing a platform where the campus community can engage with complex scientific concepts through discussions, hands-on workshops, and outreach initiatives. By maintaining a balance between rigorous academic inquiry and accessible public engagement, the club has established itself as a vital component of the institute’s intellectual and extracurricular landscape.
The club’s academic and educational framework is anchored by several recurring initiatives designed to keep the student body informed and intellectually stimulated. One of its most consistent offerings is PAC Times, a weekly publication that synthesizes the latest developments in global physics and astronomy news. This is complemented by the PAC Reading Circle, an interactive forum where students delve into specialized topics such as topology, quantum mechanics, and general relativity in a collaborative environment. To further enrich the learning experience, the club frequently hosts high-level colloquiums and public talks featuring distinguished scientists and researchers. These sessions have covered diverse subjects, including the discovery of Fast Radio Bursts, the interstellar origins of organic molecules, and the theoretical complexities of black holes, often inviting experts from prestigious institutions like the Raman Research Institute and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Observational astronomy remains a cornerstone of the club’s activities, utilizing the campus’s open spaces for regular stargazing and celestial monitoring. These observation sessions, often held at the Biotech Lawn or Nalanda Ground, allow students to use powerful telescopes to view planetary alignments, lunar eclipses, and deep-space objects. Beyond simple viewing, these sessions often incorporate scientific data collection, such as measuring luminosity changes during astronomical events. The club also places a significant emphasis on the art and science of astrophotography, hosting dedicated workshop series that teach students how to capture wide-field landscapes, planetary details, and deep-sky phenomena like nebulae and galaxies. This focus on visual documentation culminates in annual competitions and features in the club’s publications, where students can showcase their technical proficiency in celestial imaging.
In terms of large-scale competitive events, the Physics & Astronomy Club organizes the National Space Hackathon, a premier national-level competition that challenges participants to solve real-world technical problems related to space exploration. This event requires students to apply engineering, programming, and analytical skills to develop software tools, algorithms, and technical reports addressing operational challenges faced by space missions. Additionally, the club plays a significant role during Tryst, IIT Delhi’s annual technical festival. During this period, the club facilitates high-profile collaborations, such as exhibitions featuring satellite models and innovations from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). These events often include panel discussions with senior ISRO scientists, providing students with direct insights into India’s space missions, including the Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan programs.
The club’s commitment to science communication is further evidenced by its diverse range of publications and creative media. Confluence Chronicles serves as the club’s flagship newsletter and magazine, providing a space for science journalism and in-depth explorations of physics-related themes. The club also produces an annual magazine that integrates research articles with a dedicated section for astronomical photography, titled Beauty You Captured. This focus on journalism and creative storytelling is managed by a specialized domain within the club’s executive structure, ensuring that scientific information is not only accurate but also visually engaging and accessible to a broader audience. Through these publications, the club documents its history and the evolving scientific interests of the IIT Delhi community.
Community building and internal development are managed through a structured organizational hierarchy consisting of coordinators and executives across various specialized domains. These domains include Research, Tech & Infra, Events & Logistics, Science Journalism, and Creative Design. The recruitment process is rigorous, seeking students who demonstrate both technical expertise and a passion for scientific outreach. To integrate new members, particularly first-year students, the club organizes unique social events such as the Lost Protocol treasure hunt, which combines cryptic problem-solving with campus exploration. The sense of identity within the club is further reinforced through custom merchandise, such as the PAC hoodie, which has become a recognizable symbol of the physics community on campus. Through this blend of rigorous science, technical innovation, and social cohesion, the Physics & Astronomy Club continues to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers at IIT Delhi.
