Indradhanu is the official LGBTQIA+ student collective of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, serving as a centralized platform for advocacy, community building, and the promotion of inclusive discourse on campus. As a formally recognized body within the institute's ecosystem, the organization is dedicated to creating a safe and transformative environment for students of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. The collective is managed by an annual cohort of student coordinators who oversee its strategic vision and administrative functions. To ensure a grassroots reach across the institute’s residential life, Indradhanu maintains a network of Diversity Representatives across all seventeen student hostels. This structural integration allows the collective to foster empathy and provide support systems that address the specific needs of the queer community within the rigorous academic setting of IIT Delhi.

The flagship initiative of Indradhanu is Vibhinn, an annual multi-day pride festival that serves as a cornerstone of queer visibility and celebration in the region. Vibhinn is characterized by its thematic focus, such as the concept of repairing recognition and reparative justice, which guides its various sessions. A central component of the festival is the All India Queer Collective Conference, an expansive gathering that brings together dozens of queer collectives and community-based organizations from across the country to discuss intersectional issues and institutional organizing. The festival culminates in a campus-wide Pride March, a public demonstration of unity and diversity that begins at the Nalanda Grounds. Accompanying these events are exhibitions like Strides for Pride, which documents the historical milestones and resilient struggles of the LGBTQIA+ movement, and Chrysalis, a pre-festival art event designed to encourage self-expression through visual media.

Beyond its large-scale festival, Indradhanu maintains a robust calendar of creative and intellectual programming throughout the academic year. During the summer months, the collective organizes the Summer of Pride in collaboration with other campus bodies like the Literary Club. This initiative features creative writing prompts, book and movie reviews, and the Queer Qrossword, all designed to highlight queer narratives in art and literature. The collective also facilitates Queerbox, an anonymous letterbox system that allows community members to share stories, confessions, and experiences in a secure manner. Performance arts are similarly prioritized through events like Queer’s Got Talent, which provides a stage for music, dance, and drag performances, including tributes to historic movements such as the ballroom and vogueing scenes. These activities are supplemented by social gatherings, including open houses for new members and annual retreats focused on fostering interpersonal bonds through games and communal dining.

Indradhanu plays a significant role in the intellectual life of the institute by hosting academic lectures and panel discussions that bridge the gap between activism and scholarship. The collective frequently invites prominent scholars and legal experts to address the campus community on topics ranging from trans-kothi-hijra movements in India to the intersections of caste and queer identities. Notable sessions have included fireside chats with members of the judiciary who were instrumental in the decriminalization of homosexuality in India, focusing on the power of constitutional morality and fundamental rights. By collaborating with the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and various student clubs, Indradhanu ensures that queer perspectives are integrated into the broader cultural and academic fabric of the institute, moving beyond tokenism toward substantive inclusion.

The organization operates in close alignment with the institute’s administrative framework, particularly the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. This partnership is exemplified by the collective’s involvement in the orientation of new students during the Tour of Stalls and its participation in farewell ceremonies for key administrative figures, such as the Dean of Diversity and Inclusion. Through these institutional channels, Indradhanu advocates for systemic changes that enhance the safety and well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals on campus. By combining high-profile advocacy with consistent community support and intellectual engagement, Indradhanu functions not only as a support group but as a vital cultural institution that challenges traditional campus norms and promotes a more pluralistic and empathetic academic environment.
