Karakoram, affectionately called Kara, was established in 1966 and houses around 450 residents. The hostel carries the Sanskrit motto "सर्वश्रेष्ठम् सर्वसुंदरम् काराकोरम् काराकोरम्" (The best, the most beautiful, Karakoram, Karakoram). Named after the Karakoram mountain range, the hostel is known for its strong sense of camaraderie and competitive spirit.
Facilities
All hostels at IIT Delhi share a common set of facilities:
- Mess — Each hostel has its own dining hall with a mess serving vegetarian food daily; non-vegetarian options are available on select days (separately paid). There are no self-cooking facilities.
- Wi-Fi and LAN — High-speed wireless internet and wired LAN connections are available throughout.
- Common Rooms — Air-conditioned TV rooms, visiting rooms, and lounges.
- Reading Room — Dedicated quiet study spaces.
- Indoor Games — Table tennis, billiards/pool, carrom, chess, and other indoor games.
- Laundry — Washing machines are available on each floor or in designated laundry areas.
- Drinking Water — Purified drinking water supply on each floor.
- Sports Facilities — Most hostels have basketball courts, shuttle (badminton) courts, and cricket practice nets.
- Gym — Most hostels have a gymnasium.
- Water Coolers — During the summer season, water coolers are allowed inside rooms.
Rooms are typically two-seater (shared), equipped with cots and almirahs. Rooms are non-air-conditioned for UG students, though common areas are air-conditioned.
Governance
Each hostel operates in a fully cooperative mode with elected student leadership under faculty mentorship:
- Head of House — A faculty member who serves as the overall head.
- Warden — A faculty member assisting in day-to-day administration.
- House Secretary — An elected student representative who leads the House Working Committee (HWC).
- Mess Secretary — Manages mess operations and food quality.
- Sports Secretary — Organizes sports activities and inter-hostel competitions.
- Cultural Secretary — Coordinates cultural events and performances.
- Maintenance Secretary — Oversees hostel maintenance and cleanliness.
The House Working Committee (HWC) decides the pattern and pace of life in each hostel. It has an Executive Committee and sub-committees for Mess, Common Room, and House Maintenance. A special House Honours Committee (HHC) handles disciplinary matters.
All hostels come under the Board of Hostel Management (BHM), which is headed by the Associate Dean Hostel Management (ADHM).
