=== Department of Materials Science and Engineering ===

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) has been established on 1st January 2018 for developing and undertaking research on materials for specific end uses.

It holds the privilege of being the only materials research and engineering department in Delhi-NCR region. Traditionally, MSE programs involve two major classifications – a) functional, and b) structural materials. While these classifications are self-explanatory in nature and carry the weight of historical precedent, with the rise of smart materials, novel fabrication methods, and advances in biomaterials and pharmaceuticals, it has become increasingly common to cross such divisions both inside MSE, but also in interaction with external disciplines.

The new Materials Science and Engineering department is inherently an interdisciplinary Department that draws from practitioners in all application areas, as well as study of fundamentals of materials science.

Greetings and a warm welcome to the Department of Materials Science & Engineering (DMSE) at IIT Delhi. We are a group of materials scientists and engineers working towards meeting the growing demands for materials experts for high-tech industries and solving the potential problems by undertaking cutting-edge fundamental and applied research that is directly linked to industry. Ongoing research activities in the department are highly interdisciplinary with an increasingly young, vibrant, and enthusiastic faculty setting the tone for future growth of the department. Our core faculties are focussing on areas related to polymer, metal, functional, and computational materials, where we aspire to combine principles of engineering and basic sciences in research to address challenging problems in material science that are relevant to society.

The focus of research and development activities of the Department is towards the rational design of materials and processes, engineering of desired material structure and properties, fabrication and synthetic process development, integration of materials in devices, characterization of materials and devices, and development of prototypes.

Centre for Polymer Science and Engineering (CPSE), emerges as an independent entity and continues as a leading centre in the country for teaching and research in new frontiers in polymer science and technology.

In an effort to boost the study of materials and promote multidisciplinary research, IIT Delhi starts a new department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE). CPSE merges with DMSE to maintain the ongoing research in the area of polymers.
